The power of eyebrows
I always find my work as a beauty therapist extremely rewarding, but some clients stick in your mind more than others. One day I received a phone call from a woman enquiring about semi-permanent eyebrows, and asking about what microblading involved. It transpired during our chat that she had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, and was worried about how losing her eyebrows and eyelashes would affect her appearance during her treatment.
Eyebrow embroidery can only be carried out prior to chemotherapy treatment, and five weeks post treatment. This is to ensure there is no risk of infection. The girl who rang wasn’t due to start her chemotherapy regimen for four weeks, so it was the optimum time for her to come and have her eyebrows microbladed. The client was thrilled with the results of the eyebrow embroidery, and loved the natural but defined look it gave her brows. She was so happy to know that if/when she lost her eyebrow hair, she would still have realistic-looking, natural eyebrows.
I love making someone look like the best version of themselves, and eyebrow embroidery is such a rewarding procedure for both me and the client. Dealing with someone going through their cancer journey is different, however. They are fearful of what the future holds, and the loss of their hair, eyebrows and eyelashes is often one of the most distressing aspects of their treatment. Being able to help them with this upsetting part of their illness is so fulfilling for me.
The same client thankfully came through her treatment, and is due to come in for her 12-month top-up on her eyebrows soon. She loves her new eyebrows, and says she will continue to maintain them.
Breast cancer, thankfully, is becoming more and more treatable, and more women than ever survive and go on to lead healthy lives. Looking good during and after cancer treatment is a major priority for a lot of these women. This shouldn’t be dismissed as superficial – how we look is so closely linked to how we feel, and for many women looking and feeling like themselves again is one of the most important outcomes of their breast cancer journey. By giving them back their eyebrows, I feel very lucky that I can play a small part in helping them achieve that. Thank you for reading my blog on The power of eyebrows. Sherise x
