Microblading is the ultimate solution if you want to get those gorgeously glam, Instagram-perfect brows, so here is how to keep them flawless after the procedure!
Microbladed brows will immediately boost your confidence as you’ll walk out of the salon with selfie-ready brows! However, there are a few steps that need to be taken to maintain them after the appointment. From good moisturizers to sunscreens, here is what you need to keep those new brows fresh, healthy and long-lasting.
What to Expect from Your Microblading Appointment?
Microblading is a safe and painless procedure performed by trained professionals, so it shouldn’t worry you. Before the procedure, you can consult your cosmetician on the desired shape and density of your eyebrows. You will see a detailed drawing of what your brows will look like after the procedure and make sure you’re happy with the result. Using very fine blades for maximum precision, your brow artist will distribute pigment under the skin, creating a natural, feather-like effect mimicking your real eyebrow hair. The effect is very different from the one created with eyebrow tattooing, because the lines are finer and more similar to your natural hair. The pigment doesn’t go as deep into your skin as it would with a regular tattoo, making it a more suitable option for anyone who wants to mimic the look of real eyebrows (even if you don’t have any).
Once your first microblading treatment is finished, it is time for some brow pampering. Your skin will enter a healing process that will take a few weeks, so treat it gently and carefully. Here is what to do to keep your sensitive skin happy and healthy during this period!
About 2-3 hours after your first microblading appointment, put a very small amount of sterile water on a cotton pad and gently clean the treated area. Make sure the cotton pad is just barely damp, not wet. Repeat this process about 2-4 times on the first day and keep repeating it for the following two days after treatment. This will keep the sensitive area clean and prevent any build-up of blood or lymph. Four days after the treatment, you can start cleaning your eyebrows with alcohol-free disinfectants, such as witch hazel. Apply the product on a cotton ball and rub it into your eyebrows a couple of times per day. If your skin starts feeling dry, add some moisture to your skin by coating it with a small amount of a skin healing ointment such as Aquaphor.
To protect your sensitive skin in the first few weeks after the appointment, you should avoid certain activities:
- Don’t get the area wet! Skipping the gym, sauna or the beach until your skin heals may be a good idea.
- Don’t put makeup near the wound (not that you’ll even need any with your new brows!)
- Don’t pick at the scabs! Any itching you may experience is perfectly normal and it will go away faster if you let your skin heal naturally.
What to Expect During the Healing Process
By following all the aftercare instructions carefully, you will minimize all the potential discomfort and make the process completely safe and painless. These are just some of the normal stages you may go through in the weeks following the treatment.
In the first few days, the colour of your eyebrows will still be very dark and the shape will be sharp, but it will soon start fading away due to the healing process. Finding pigment on a cotton pad after cleaning the skin is quite common, but after a while, it will settle in completely. And don’t be alarmed if you notice some swelling, because that’s just a natural part of your skin’s natural healing process.
In about a week after the treatment, you may also experience slight itchiness and skin flaking while the pigment starts fading away. This is also perfectly normal! Just resist the urge to scratch your skin and let it heal gradually. During the second week, your eyebrows might seem to have faded completely, but soon after this, the colour will “reappear” once the pigment settles. This indicates that your skin is close to being entirely healed!
Your Next Touch-Up Appointment
About 6 to 8 weeks after the initial procedure, you may want to return to your salon for a touch-up. After the healing process is complete, you may lose up to 70% of the pigment and your artist will repeat the whole procedure to boost the colour. This will be the last step on your journey to perfect brows! At this stage, the brow artist can make your eyebrows darker, fill in any gaps and add any final touches to perfect your new look.
How to Make the Effect Last Longer
Once the second treatment is complete, you will finally have your dream brows! The effect can last up to one or even two years, depending on your skin quality and aftercare. One of the best tricks to make your microbladed brows look flawless longer is to wear sunscreen religiously. You might already know that wearing sunscreen regularly prevents ageing and skin cancer, but it also keeps the pigment under your skin from fading away too quickly. You can say goodbye to all the brow pencils, gels and powders that have been haunting your makeup bag and wasting your precious time and money! And even when your brows are faded away, you can get them redone by your trusted cosmetician.
