With semi-permanent brows, you will look flawless as soon as you wake up, but here is what actually happens to the color over time!

Brow make-up has become a part of every woman’s beauty routine (some men do them too!), because it is that one important detail which instantly gives us a clean and groomed look. Let’s be honest, mascaras, eyeliners, lipsticks, foundations, blushers, bronzers and highlighters are just not that important anymore.

But painting your brows every day can be time-consuming and laborious. Imagine falling asleep and waking up with perfectly shaped and colored brows every day! Maybe you don’t have that extra five minutes before going to work, or are suffering from the consequences of over-plucking which was ever-so-popular in the 1990s, or you just love looking chic before you even start doing your make-up? The solution to all of these problems is called  semi-permanent brows! They are very popular right now, but many girls worry whether they will look natural enough and whether the color really stays spot on.

Some Facts

Semi-permanent brows will frame your face beautifully and the color can last quite long. The tattoo-like effect is achieved by adding pigmentation between the epidermal and dermal layer of your skin, which is located right beneath the surface. This is why the color is long-lasting but tends to fade away overtime, unlike the classic tattoo. And it is much less painful, because the color doesn’t go deep into your skin. After being treated with a topical anesthetic applied onto your skin, you won’t feel any unpleasant sensations, because the micro needles won’t penetrate deep into your tissue. Unlike the old-fashioned cosmetic tattoo which leads to discoloration and you might end up with a completely different shade over time, new techniques use pigments that don’t change but only gradually fade away.

Color Fading

But how long does it take for the color to start fading and what should you do when it actually does? Beauticians initially use darker ink, because it gets lighter once the skin is fully recovered from the procedure. Due to the process of healing, you may lose even up to 50% or 70% of the color during the first 30 days after dying your brows. But don’t worry because this is perfectly normal! This procedure is usually followed by a touch-up session four weeks after the first appointment, unless you are perfectly happy with the shade of your brows at that point.

Even though your eyebrows will look gorgeous and Instagrammable right after the first treatment, it may take a little more time for you to strike the perfect shade. Professionals often suggest that it is better to opt for a slightly darker color in the beginning, because it will fade anyway and you can compare different hues to see which one suits you better. Some girls know their ideal color right from the beginning, but for others, it takes a bit longer to figure it all out.

After the initial treatment and the first follow-up after a month, your eyebrow color will stay put for months. It depends on the properties of your own skin, but the effect usually lasts between 12 and 18 months. When the color starts losing its vibrancy, it is time for a second touch-up, and then you will have your perfect brows for another 12 to 18 months.

A Variety of Techniques

The most popular techniques right now include the famed microblading and powder fill. You are probably wondering what the difference is between them and what happens with the color. Microblading is a technique created especially for the eyebrows and it provides a very natural look and subtle shades, because a very thin needle is used for drawing refined feather-like lines. Your beautician should be someone who has the precision and skills of an artist, but also someone who knows skin very well and has undertaken a course to master this new method. The final result? Perfectly drawn brows which look almost exactly like natural ones. Depending on the shape and texture of your natural brows, this treatment can take between 45 minutes and an hour and a half, because it is basically drawing new hair line by line. This procedure is ideal for filling, adjusting and reshaping, but it is also a life-saving solution for those who don’t have any hair due to illness or an accident for example. The color is just as natural as the shape and even though it is durable, you may need a top-up every year.

Similar to the traditional techniques used to create semi-permanent make-up or cosmetic tattoos, the powder fill technique plants the pigment a little deeper in the tissue. The color is richer and the final result is a bolder look. The idea is not to achieve a subtle look, but to have eyebrows which look like you have already put your make-up on. This method requires fewer touch-ups than microblading and it is better for those who want a visible change and pigmentation that lasts longer. It is also more suitable for mature skin which isn’t so elastic anymore. The color fades gradually but slower.

While the first procedure is designed to give you a very rich and textured natural look, the second one provides a more substantial coverage and a more durable color. Not sure which method to choose? The optimal solution is to combine these two techniques! This means that you will get the precision and refined touch of microblading as well as the boldness and strong pigmentation of the powder brow method. When you walk out of the salon, you will have the perfect brows which look natural, but with cool brow makeup on. The color will fade slowly and you won’t need too many touch-ups.

At Contour by Sherise you will get a unique experience because Sherise combines both techniques in a unique way to achieve optimal results. With 15 years of experience in the beauty industry and having worked with semi-permanent brows for 7 years, she has seen many techniques and finally designed a unique method. Her personal style strikes the perfect balance between microblading and powder brow and delivers a very professional result, natural look and color that lasts longer. Knowing that brows have the power to transform the face and that every person requires a different color and shape, she is very meticulous in choosing the optimal brow style for each client she works with.

But perhaps you are wondering is it all worth the money? Just think about all the make-up products you will buy over the next three years. And imagine how many times you will wake up too late with brows that are in desperate need of grooming. With semi-permanent brows, especially if you select a technique that combines microblading and powder fill, you will look styled as soon as you get out of bed and the color will look fresh for a long time. It is something you can hardly put a price on.

Hello. I was trying to find out how long the powder brow usually last before it starts to fade. You say microblading needs a touch up once a year but what about powder brows that are deeper in the skin and more durable?
